With 47 consecutive victories...top ranked Iowa City Regina is tied with Anamosa and West Des Moines Dowling for the 3rd longest winning streak in Iowa High School football history. The Regals have won their last two outings without the services of senior running back Riley Dixon who suffered an ankle injury in the week 3 game against West Branch. The Regals outscored their last two opponents 93-12. Dixon's condition continues to improve and he is questionable for this week's non-district game at Alburnett(2-3).
In Class 3A...Solon is 4 and 1 overall and 2 and 0 in District 6 play after beating Kevin Miller's brother Mike and his Central DeWitt squad Friday. Senior QB Jacob Black led an impressive ground attack for the Spartans who return home to face Anamosa(0-5) this week.
In Class 4A...3rd ranked IC West is off to a 5-0 start for the second straight year. Trojans entertain Dubuque Hempstead(3-2) this week. Mustangs are coming off a loss at City High. The KXIC Game of the Week feaures the Little Hawks as they travel to Dubuque Senior. City High has rolled off 4 straight wins since losing a close one to Cedar Falls in the season opener. Senior is a disappointing 1-4 including last weekend's home loss to IC West. Jody Krueger joins me for the broadcast starting at 7:15.
Friday marks the halfway point of the high school football season as teams start the push for the postseason. In Class 1A top ranked Regina is showing no signs of slowing down after extending its winning streak to 46 with last weekend's win at Eddyville-Blakesburg. Regals return home Friday to face Cardinal of Eldon. West Branch will try and get back on track this weekend after losing to Regina and 5th ranked Wilton the last two weeks. Bears will try and get their 1st district win at Wapello Friday.
In class 4A 3rd ranked Iowa City West remains unbeaten after surviving a scare at Prairie. Hawks took a 14-7 lead in the 3rd quarter and looked poised to make a two possession game until the Trojan defense came up with a big interception deep in their own territory. Senior fullback Micah Kelsey scored two 4th quarter touchdowns and West escaped with the victory. They travel to Dubuque to take on a disappointing Senior squad that has started 1 and 3. City High continues to gain momemtum and looks in good position to make the play-offs heading into the second half of the season. Little Hawks have won 3 straight and Host Dubuque Hempstead Friday Night. Mustangs also post a 3 and 1 record...but both squads will be looking for their 1st victory over a team with a winning record.
The KXIC Game of the Week features the "Miller Bowl" from Dewitt...as Kevin Miller and the Solon Spartans tangle with his brother Mike Miller and the Sabres from Central DeWitt in a key Class 3A District 6 match-up. Sabres forfeited their 1st two wins of the season for violating a state rule regarding player participation. One of the wins was the District opener over Maquoketa two weeks ago. Jody Krueger will join me for the broadcast starting at 7:15.
The 'cream' starting to rise.
With a third of the high school football season complete...the cream is starting to rise to the top. Top ranked Regina extended its winning streak to 45 games with a home win over West Branch. Regals hit the road this week to face Eddyville-Blakesburg.
After being shutout by Regina the previous week...Solon rebounded nicely with a 45-13 win at Mount Pleasant. Spartans begin district play at home Friday night against a 1-2 Clear Creek Amana squad and new head coach and former Hawkeye Matt Hughes.
After a disappointing home loss in the opener to Cedar Falls...City High has picked up back-to-back road wins against Waterloo West and Waterloo East. Little Hawks return home Friday to take on a winless Cedar Rapids Jefferson team.
3rd-ranked Iowa City West looked good for a third straight week taking out previously unbeaten Kennedy at home last Friday. Trojans will travel up Interstate 380 Friday night with revenge on their mind. The KXIC Game of the Week features West at Prairie on homecoming night at John Wall Field. The Hawks knocked West out of the play-offs in the second round last season in Iowa City. Prairie is coming off consecutive losses to Kennedy and Xavier. The Saints defense was the most dominate I've seen in recent memory as they shutout Prairie and limited the offense to just 92 total yards. The Prairie defense looked pretty good in shutting out the Saints in the first half...but the Hawks offense is struggling to find consistency at the quarterback position in Coach Morrissey's spread offense. West's offense has had no problems finding the end zone...averaging over 52 points a game. Senior quarterback Nate Boland had another fine performance in the win over the Cougars rushing for 115 yards and 4 scores. The defense has been stellar as well giving up 15 points a contest.
Jody Krueger will join me for the broadcast starting at 7:15.
Things start to heat up in week 3 of the High School football schedule with many teams starting District/Division play.
In class 4A...one of the most interesting match-ups in the MVC will be played in
Iowa City with West hosting Kennedy. Trojans and Cougars are the
only undefeated teams in the Mississippi Division. West has
outscored its opponents 116-32 and Kennedy is coming off a nice 4th qtr
come-from-behind win at Prairie. After nearly pulling off the upset
over Top 10 Cedar Falls in the opener...City High got back on track with a win
at Waterloo West in week 2. Little Hawks head back to Black Hawk
County Friday night for a date with 0-2 Waterloo East.
Class 3A...Solon has one last non-district match-up at Mt Pleasant. Spartans
will look to reignite an offense that was shutout by Regina last week against
an 0-2 Panthers squad that's given up 86 points in two outings.
The 'KXIC Game of the Week' is a good one out of Class 1A-District 6 with #1 Regina entertaining West Branch. After shutting out Solon the Regals are riding
a 44-game winning streak with Marv Cook taking on his former coach Butch
Pederson. Bears are 2-0. Mark Pitz and Jody Krueger will have the call starting at 7:00.
I have the broadcast night off so I'm heading to Saints Field for the
Xavier/Prairie contest. I have the West/Prairie game in week 4 so I wanna
get another look at the Hawks after seeing the Trojans take care of Washington
last week. I also wanna get a look at #2 Xavier. Saints and Trojans don't meet in the regular season.
Don't forget...after the Regina/WB game KXIC will air WMT's scoreboard show live from 10 to midnight. Andy Petersen and MVC Commish Randy Krejci will have all the scores and breakdowns from Friday's action in Eastern Iowa. Then on Saturday morning Jason Miller has a complete recap of the area teams...and
reaction from the head coaches. The Coaches Corner starts live at 8:00 am from Midtown Family Restaurant in Iowa City.
For those of you attending games Friday night...you may actually need a jacket in the second half. Could happen.
The High School Football season is underway and it was a good start for many schools in Johnson County with Iowa City West, Regina, Solon and West Branch posting wins and City High nearly pulling off the upset of 6th ranked Cedar Falls. Our KXIC game this week features a Mississippi Valley Conference matchup with 4th ranked West visiting Cedar Rapids Washington at Kingston Stadium. Despite graduating some big time offensive skill position players like Morgan, Reiners and Alexander...the Trojans had no trouble scoring touchdowns in their opener as they beat Linn-Mar 67-28. West should see a little better defense Friday when facing a Warrior team that lost to cross town rival Kennedy 14-10. Paul James has returned for a second coaching stint at Washington. James coached the team from 1995 through 2005 and stepped down to become the school's athletics director. Tony Lombardi took over and held the post until resigning in April amid allegations he mistreated players. James stepped in and is ready to lead the program again. Jody Krueger will join me for the broadcast starting at 7:15.
Other area match-ups this week include:
Regina @ Solon
City High @ Waterloo West
Durant @ West Branch
It won't be long before the kids are back in school and High School football teams are back on the gridiron. Mark Pitz, Jody Krueger and I are dusting off the headsets as we get ready for another year of great matchups on KXIC.
Can City High bounce back? Can IC West have another undefeated regular season? Will Regina ever lose? Tune in Friday nights and find out!
The broadcast schedule is set (http://www.kxic.com/pages/LocalSports.html?feed=476730&article=11524616) and it all starts August 30 with Solon playing at Mount Vernon as the two longtime rivals battle for bragging rights on Highway 1.
Following the conclusion of each game KXIC will again broadcast WMT's Eastern Iowa High School Football Scoreboard Show with Andy Petersen and Randy Krecji.
Don't forget to listen to KXIC on Saturday mornings to hear what the area coaches have to say as Jason Miller hosts the Coaches Corner live from Midtown Family Restaurant in Iowa City.
You can find out more about the show on Jason's blog: http://www.kxic.com/pages/CoachesCorner.html
