Only 3 of the 5 teams represented on the Coaches Corner show each Saturday morning remain.
IOWA CITY WEST - The Trojans are hitting their stride at just the right time. Perhaps it was the 66-37 defeat at the hands of Cedar Rapids Washington in week 8 that gave this team a renewed sense of confidence. I do not know what it was, but it worked. Defeating then top ranked Cedar Falls on the road in the UNI-Dome in the final week, 21-10, secured an MVC conference title on the west side of Iowa City for the first time since 2003.
Charles Rogers, Dondre Alexander, Jeremy Morgan, and Anthony Brown form one of the most potent quartet of offensive performers in the state. Rogers alone amassed over 500 yards of offense in the Trojans first round playoff game. He would then hit the 300 yard barrier in the second round - a 39-7 revenge victory from 2010 defeat at the hands of North Scott.
Now the only 4A team remaining from Iowa City in the playoffs, Coach Brian Sauser and his crew are just one victory away from getting the high octane Trojan offense to the semifinals. And, if that happens, it will be like a return of the 1999 St Louis Rams and their "Greatest Show on Turf".
PREDICTION: West High 34, Bettendorf 27
IOWA CITY REGINA - If there is a better team from any class not labelled 4A, I will give you a lot of money.
The Regals are not just winning, they are dominating their opponents in a downright embarassing fashion. Regina's first team offense has not played in the second half of a football game since the end of the 2010 state title game. And, that probably does not bother Coach Cook and his staff.
Offensive Coordinator Ed Hinkel is licking his chops each night before bed. He could draw a play up on an abacus with this team and it would go for 65 yards and a touchdown.
There is no team that has challenged the Regals yet.
....well, not yet anyway.
PREDICTION: IC Regina 48, Mediapolis 13
WEST BRANCH - Playoffs and semifinal games are synonymous with West Branch Bear football.
The Bears are the only Class 1A team to have reached the Dome for a semifinal game in the past three seasons. In fact, just four other teams have achieved the same (Armstrong-Ringstead and Lenox in 8-man play, Solon in 2A/3A, and North Tama in A). Armstrong-Ringstead is the only other team with that dream still alive.
Since losing its second and third games, West Branch has defeated the next eight teams it has played by an average of 44-10. This includes a 42-7 first round home victory over Starmont, and a come from behind victory (WB trailed 20-7 in the second quarter) against Turkey Valley, 27-20, on Monday in round 2. Cade Jones and Brandon Young both eclipsed the 100 yard rushing mark on Monday.
The last team to beat West Branch? Alburnett.
Who does West Branch play on Monday in the quarterfinals at the Little Rose Bowl? Alburnett.
Revenge is a dish best served cold (gametime temp projected at around 35 degrees).
PREDICTION: West Branch 34, Alburnett 20
Be sure to listen on Saturday morning at 8:00 as we speak with City High's Dan Sabers, West High's Brian Sauser, Regina's Marv Cook, Solon's Kevin Miller, and West Branch's Butch Pedersen on the Coaches' Corner. Listen on AM 800 KXIC or join us live at the Midtown Family Restaurant, located just off of Scott Boulevard on the east side of Iowa City.

Cedar Rapids Washington 66
Iowa City West 37
K. J. Pilcher of the Cedar Rapids Gazette probably summarized it best---and especially for those who knew “Grandpa,” when standout performer David Tann had to play a football game last Friday night after the death of his grandfather, Jerry Tann, who died on Sunday, October 9, and certainly was on the mind of the Warrior family as he was a tremendous supporter of Washington High School and a standout athletic official during his life of 67 years. David Tann’s father is Kevin Tann, also an outstanding gentlemen and awesome wrestling official and football, with wrestling taking him all the way to the Big Ten realm and national prominence as a wrestling arbiter around the United States.
David Tann, the excellent athlete on both sides of the ball—offensively and defensively—is a key cog to the Warrior attack. He was the main force in the Washington win over Iowa City West 66-37 on the Trojan field to propel Washington to a 3-3 division mark and a winner record of 5-3 overall for Coach Tony Lombardi’s squad. Washington has had the best luck against both of the Iowa City teams this year as compared to any other teams in the Mississippi Valley Conference.
The first drive of the game found Tann in the end zone on a two yard burst. He also added a 33 yard TD in the first half and forced a fumble from the standout quarterback at West High, Charlie Rogers, who will be attending Iowa State University next year, and with Ryan Cain intercepting a pass for a touchdown, the Warriors were in good shape going into halftime with a 31-7 lead.
Iowa City West is now one game behind Cedar Falls in the Valley Division race, but West High has already qualified for the playoffs and do face Cedar Falls (the #2 team in the Class 4A Associated Press rankings) for the final regular season game next Friday night in the UNI-Dome.
By the end of this stunning evening, Jerry Tann was looking down and would really have been proud!
Linn-Mar 17
Iowa City, City High 12
It was definitely the biggest game in Class 4A in the state of Iowa! Third rated Linn-Mar against fifth rated Iowa City, City High School and it took the Linn-Mar outfit to finally keep Ronald Thompson and Jasper Washington out of the end zone and keep the Little Hawks from putting a lot of points on the board. City High was limited to scoring by Drew Cornwell who booted two field goals---20 and 23 yards---and Amos Lavela who was going to run a short burst that ended up being an awesome 77 yard run to put City High within five points in the fourth quarter.
Linn-Mar has a lot of offensive weapons and the scoring for the Lions, which helped them end a dozen game losing streak to City High, was led by Mark Atwater—standout quarterback—who ran six yards for a touchdown, and Andy Henry who caught a TD pass from Atwater, and Quinn Trieber with his leg—he booted a 42 yard field goal and added extra points to the touchdown to ultimately give Linn-Mar their 17-12 win on the evening at the beautiful new stadium in Marion, Iowa, now the permanent home of the Lions. Lavela was the only City High runner to have over 100 yards and Mitch Wontock had 201 yards on 26 carries for Linn-Mar. Jasper Washington struggled a bit on his passing as he was 2-10 gaining 63 yards. Atwater was 5-13, threw one interception and had 79 yards through the air.
Cedar Rapids Prairie 35
Dubuque Hempstead 28
The Kolache Bowl was a big game that the west siders of Cedar Rapids take great pride in and that was Prairie’s first victory of the season—now the streaks goes to two games in a row as Prairie held a 14-7 halftime lead and both squads scored 21 points in the second half and Prairie won on Senior Night 35-28 to move their record to 2-6 on the year and keep some very slim playoff hopes alive for new coach, Mike Morrissey, and the Hawks.
Nothing seems to get people more pumped up at Prairie than when the Prairie Hawks marching band, under the direction of Craig Aune, takes the field and with a thrilling rendition of the National Anthem and then with the introduction of more than 40 seniors a part of this great fine arts group, it seemed like this would be a big night for Prairie.
Hempstead seemed to stall a bit on their first possession of the ball game, but after they punted the ball away a mishandled punt saw Ken Hintz nab the fumble and Coach Mark Ehlers’ Mustang squad moved the ball freely and ended up drawing first blood when Layton Fritsch blasted one yard at the 6:52 mark of the opening quarter and with Chris Francis booting the extra point, Hempstead was ahead 7-0. Prairie rallied quickly and just before the end of the first quarter, Jarred Edmonds, caught a 28 yard TD pass from sophomore quarterback Dylan Kuchemann thrown into the starting role due to a nagging injury continuing to plague Jace Hanna for Prairie. Austin Reutzel kicked all the extra points for the Hawks.
With the Jerry Winter championship caliber football crew arbitrating the action, it seemed like a playoff atmosphere as we worked through the second quarter. Early in the second stanza it appeared that Demetrius Harper might have a 60+ yard awesome punt return go for a score, but a block in the back was noted and negated that score. Still Coach Morrissey’s Prairie squad stayed on their relentless offensive attach and eventually did have to punt it away. Mitch Dellamuth did have a nifty interception to his credit for Prairie near the end of the second quarter, but the two plays of the game that might be the keys to this victory included a 71 yard pass that was caught by Austin Delamuth (his only catch of the night) and then a four yard plunge by Cameron Rathje for paydirt.
Layton Fritsch was the star of the show for Hempstead; he added three more touchdowns in the second half to keep the Mustangs in the game. His touchdowns were of 33, 6, and 3 yards and Francis converted on all of his extra points. Prairie scoring in the second half was done by Demetrius Harper on an 8 yard run and an 88 yard kickoff return.
Early in the third quarter, Brayton Carlson also had a 53 run for a score. The sophomore preliminary contest was a defensive thriller---Hempstead won 7-0.
Cedar Rapids Kennedy 42
Waterloo West 19
The Cougars evened their record to 4-4 on the year and hope to clinch a playoff berth and this was done by virtue of a 42-19 win over Waterloo West at Memorial Stadium in Waterloo on Friday. Quarterback Jimmy Lizarraga figured in three touchdowns for Kennedy—he had one passing touchdown and scored two running on the ground for Coach Tim Lewis’ squad. The H & H men each had a pair of touchdowns—Trevor Heitland and Alex Hillyer.
Kennedy is now 3-2 in the Mississippi Division of the MVC and Waterloo West is now 0-5 and 0-8 overall in this same division.
West High had their usual stars step up as Shawn Bowers scored their first touchdown and put West High ahead of Kennedy 7-6 when Jon Schmadeke kicked the extra point that Kennedy didn’t get and Dequayvious Martin had a 19 and 48 set of touchdown runs to help West stay in the game. Martin actually had 230 yards of rushing on the night through 28 carries and he doubled the total of Heitland for Kennedy in a losing cause. Bowers had 106 yards passing to 193 yards racked up by Cougar quarterback Jimmy Lizarraga. Heitland’s 111 yards receiving was the best of the night for either team.
Cedar Rapids Xavier 37
Cedar Rapids Jefferson 10
Carter Valentine was held to one touchdown tonight by the Jefferson J-Hawk defense though he had 41 yards total rushing. Reggie Schulte took over rushing for a first quarter TD to start the Saints scoring and then tossed a 15 yard pass to Corbin Woods to end the first quarter scoring is making quite a name for himself aiding the Xavier offensive attack. It was Matt Hansen who had a four yard TD run and Corbin Woods catching another TD in the second half to aid the Saints in this romp over Jefferson and keep their losing streak the longest of any team in Class 4A.
Jefferson did outscore Xavier 10-9 in the second half with Andrew Patience kicking a 32 yard field goal and then an extra point after a 33 yard touchdown catch by Austin Short from Layne Sullivan. Xavier will conclude their season with a big game involving Linn-Mar and Jefferson travels to Dalzell Field to take on Hempstead.
Cedar Falls 45
Dubuque Senior 0
Cedar Falls, second ranked but still keeping their undefeated record in the forefront along with Linn-Mar and West Des Moines Valley, played this time at Dalzell Field and handled Senior High School with ease in a 45-0 shutout and setting up their final regular season contest against Iowa City West for week number nine. Barkley Hill ran about ten yards every time he carried the football and 225 yards on the night and scored three touchdowns for the Tigers.
Cedar Falls amassed 430 yards of total offense with Hill having a bulk of this yardage and scoring for the Tigers. Cedar Falls under the direction of Pat Mitchell and Chad Remmert now face their biggest rival in their division, Iowa City West, in a game Friday night before both squads head off to the playoffs. Dubuque Senior now 1-7 overall on the year was led by Alex Duster who had 81 yards on the evening carrying the ball 21 times. Senior finishes up the year with Waterloo East and they finish their season at Memorial Stadium in Waterloo.
Dubuque Wahlert 28
Waterloo East 14
Dubuque Wahlert showed why they are the third best team in the Mississippi Division of the MVC chasing Linn-Mar and Iowa City, City High School when they picked up their fifth victory of the year and ensure themselves a winning record in the regular season with a 28-14 score over Waterloo East . East High is now 4-4 on the year and Kody Asmus’ Trojans could have a winning record on the year if they can win at home this coming Friday against Dubuque (1-7) Senior at Memorial Stadium near the campus of Waterloo Central Intermediate School.
East High got off to a slow start yielding three touchdowns that spotted the Golden Eagles to a 21-0 lead. Riley Mc Carron figured in each of the three—one by rushing and two by passing to teammates Brady Williams and Josh Tranel. Sam Koenig, who did not have a field goal in this game, did provide all the extra points for Wahlert on top of the four touchdowns. Williams did catch a third quarter touchdown pass from Mc Carron to cinch the 28-14 win.
Corshundous Love and junior quarterback, Desmond Van Arsdale both had short runs for touchdowns to spark the East High attack. Passing was pretty even between the two teams; Van Arsdale was 9-23 with two interceptions and passed for 165 yards. In similar fashion, Mc Carron was 11-18 with an interception and total yardage figured at 156.
Turnovers were the downfall of East and Wahlert took advantage.

Iowa City West 35
Cedar Rapids Kennedy 28
Iowa City West took a 21-7
halftime lead into the locker room in this WMT/Grinnell Mutual Game of the Week
in a Thursday night contest and held on to a 35-28 victory to push their record
to 6-1 overall and a 5-0 record specifically in the Valley Division of the
MVC. West is the highest scoring team in
the league putting up 318 points on the season compared to the 141 points they
have given up defensively.
Chico Lizarraga passed for
two touchdowns in the loss (both to Trevor Heitland) and had 347 yards through
the air compared to Charlie Rogers of Iowa City West who was 15 of 26 for 145
yards. Kennedy scored first but after
three consecutive touchdowns by West High; Richard Bryant a 64 yard run, Charlie
Rogers with a 41 yard run, and Anthony Brown a short two yard burst, West
seemingly had things under control.
Heitland had the final three touchdowns for the Cougars on runs of 10,
62, and one yard to close out the scoring on the night. Brown and Rogers both scored in the fourth
quarter for Coach Brian Sauser’s squad to solidify the victory.
Dondre Alexander was the best
receiver in the game with nine catches for 11 yards and Richard Bryant averaged
ten yards a carry on the evening at Kingston.
The Iowa City West High
sophomores won the preliminary game 38-24 and this pushed their record to 6-1
on the year thus far.
Iowa City, City High 27
Dubuque Wahlert 10
What will happen for City
High when they take the field again at Frank Bates Field after losing the week
before to Cedar Rapids Washington? Can
City High recover and get back in their winning ways? By the end of the first quarter against a
solid Wahlert team led by quarterback Riley McCarron and a team that has
already twice the victories of a year ago, City High had a 7-3 lead and were
never headed in this contest.
Sam Koenig, a noteworthy
kicker for Wahlert, drew first blood with his 22 yard field goal. Steve Ferentz, son of Iowa coach Kirk
Ferentz, caught a TD pass from Jasper Washington, one of three completions on
the night and that was good for a 7-3 first quarter lead. Drew Cornwell was responsible to a third of
City High’s points with three extra points and field goals of 28 and 39 yards
on the night.
You have to stop Ronald Thompson
if you have a chance to compete with the Little Hawks and again he made his
presence felt with 274 yards of rushing and scored twice. His carry average was almost 9 yards a tote.
Wahlert’ s only touchdown was
orchestrated by Sam Koenig when he caught a 46 yard pass from all-conference
performer, Riley McCarron, but that third quarter success was the end of
scoring for the Golden Eagles. Wahlert
now plays on Friday night against surprising Waterloo East and the Little Hawks
have perhaps the game of Class 4A in the state of Iowa as they head to Marion,
Iowa, and take on highly ranked and undefeated Linn-Mar at their new field of
prominence. The winner of the contest
will be the leader in the
Mississippi Division of the MVC.
Cedar Rapids Prairie 29
Cedar Rapids Jefferson 17
The Kolache Bowl is a big
game that the west siders of Cedar Rapids look forward to whenever it is
scheduled between Prairie and Jefferson.
This year it took on additional meaning as both teams entered with 0-6
records and the Prairie Hawks and their new coach, Mike Morrissey, enjoyed this
29-17 win and even showered or “Gatoraded” Mr. Morrissey to a bath in his first
win guiding the Hawks in 2011.
Prairie scored the first
sixteen points; the total scoring of the first half on three nifty field goals
by Austin Reutzel of 40, 24, and 30 yards and a Jared Edmonds touchdown catch
of a pass from Jace Hanna. Jefferson
notched a safety for their first two points, and then got touchdowns out of
Aaron Gruwell and a Taylor Birkicht score after catching a short pass from
Layne Sullivan.
Prairie had over 400 yards on
the night at John Wall Field and Jefferson had 171 yards of total offense. Brayton Carlson was an offensive star rushing
for almost 100 yards on eight carries and caught four passes for 79 yards. Prairie beat Jefferson in the sophomore game
22-8 and Jefferson now returns to the friendly confines of Kingston Stadium and
the Bob Brooks Press Box on Friday to take on the Xavier Saints in an in-city
matchup. Prairie gets to remain at home
for another Friday night and faces Hempstead of Dubuque in their next encounter
during week number eight in the Valley.
Linn-Mar 56
Cedar Rapids Washington 7
WOW……..expecting this one to
be a tight one right to the end on Friday night at Kingston Stadium, the Lions
of Linn-Mar enjoyed their short road trip to Kingston , led 14-0 at the
quarter, and 28-0 at halftime, and never looked back as the highly ranked Lions
even got to experience the continuous clock in this encounter and there was no
evidence that Linn-Mar was looking ahead to their big showdown in their own
stadium next Friday night with Iowa City, City High School. Jeff Johnson, writing for the Gazette and
talking with Andy Petersen on the Football Night in Iowa Scoreboard Show on WMT
and KXIC was also impressed with the good fortunes of Linn-Mar. Even he cited the harassing type defense that
Linn-Mar used to keep the Warrior quarterback in check, Braedon Tovey, and even
shut down ace receiver Flynn Heald, and top runners, Will Griffin and David
Tann, and kept all the Warriors out of the end zone except for Will Griffin who
had a one yard plunge to account for the Warrior score.
Andy Henry caught three
touchdown passes from Mark Atwater and even added a punt return for a score for
good measure. Many Linn-Mar stars
contributed on the evening—Mitch Wantock, Brandon Ophoff, Michael Redmond, John
Connor, Travis Kvach, and Jacob Hutchins to mention a few. Now comes another battle of top ten rated
teams in the state’s largest class. Any
observer of high school football knows you better get to Linn-Mar early to
check out another “biggie” between Linn-Mar and City High on Friday, October
14, 2011!
In a highly competitive
sophomore game, Linn-Mar won 28-21 to get the Lions off to a chance to get a
“doubleheader” win on the evening. The
varsity complied!
Cedar Rapids Xavier 19
Waterloo East 13
Carter Valentine is making
quite a name for himself aiding the Xavier offensive attack. It was Valentine who scored first on a major
drive where he ran for 45 yards on the opening drive and capped his performance
by a 12 yard touchdown run to start the scoring. He ran seven times for 53 yards and Josh
Steffensmeier staked the Saints to a 9-0 lead with a 26 yard field goal. On the evening, Valentine totaled 229 yards
on the run and finished with two scores.
Waterloo East scored in the
first half to narrow the halftime margin to 16-6 when Desmond Van Arsdale went
to work with his passing magic on a 63 yard scoring drive and LeTray Reed
caught a 15 yard touchdown toss from Van Arsdale to cut the margin to ten
points at the half.
In the second half, Van
Arsdale had another touchdown pass this time to Corshundous Love to aid the
Trojans of East Waterloo. Steffensmeier
finished the scoring for Xavier with a 33-yard field goal. Waterloo East now has a 4-3 record overall
and Xavier had an identical record after seven contests. East now heads to Dubuque and the Rock Bowl
to face Wahlert Catholic and Xavier will play at Kingston on Friday against the
Jefferson J-Hawks.
Dubuque Hempstead 41
Dubuque Senior 34
Heavy duty scoring was at the
forefront in this inner-city Dubuque matchup at Dalzell Field and Hempstead
picked up their second consecutive victory 41-34 on Friday night. Dubuque Senior now has a 1-5 record strictly
in the Mississippi Division and the Rams are 1-6 overall.
Offense was certainly at the
forefront as shown by the 75 points rung up by both teams. The Senior Rams looked awesome early forging
their way to a 14-0 lead after one quarter.
Coach Mark Ehlers’ Mustangs came roaring back, though, and had a 20-17
edge at halftime. Play and scoring
stayed quite even in the second half and by virtue of the 21 points scored by
Hempstead they finished with a 41-34 victory which improved the Mustang record
to 2-5 overall and 0-4 is their Valley Division record independently.
Hempstead heads to John Wall
Field in Cedar Rapids to face Prairie in week number eight and Senior remains
at home against Class 4A’s top ranked team—the Cedar Falls Tigers.
Cedar Falls 49
Waterloo West 7
Cedar Falls, top ranked, and playing
this time at Memorial Stadium scored quickly and scored often on the night and
in the words of Co-Head Coach, Pat Mitchell, “we got a little bit of everything
done; it was a big win. Anytime you can
win a metro championship, you’re very, very happy with it.” This is what he told the Waterloo Courier and
like many times before, a metro championship was secured for the Tigers as they
continue to roll and keep their record unblemished and their winning streak to
seven consecutive games, tied for the best in Class 4A this season. Like Ronald Thompson at City High, you have
to figure out how to stop the Tigers’ Barkley Hill and seldom does any team
keep him from gaining massive yardage.
Hill scored the first four touchdowns for the Tigers as Cedar Falls
jumped to a 42-0 halftime lead. Bryce
Wolf caught a five yard touchdown pass from quarterback, Ike Boettger, in the
first quarter and sure-footed kicker, Jacob Fagersten, accounted for all the
extra points all night long. 411 yards
of rushing paced the Tiger attack and West High did outgain Cedar Falls through
the air 106-66, but the massive ground game ensured a Tiger victory—their seventh
straight for 2011.
The best offense for the
Wahawks came on a 40 yard touchdown bomb from Shawn Bowers to Alex Brown. Brown was 6 for 13 with one interception at
Memorial Stadium. Boettger from Cedar
Falls was 2 for 3 for 41 yards, but the ground game really was all the Tigers
needed. The top two individuals on the
ground for Cedar Falls were Barkley Hill with 242 yards on 23 carries (better
than 10 yards every touch) and Jake Buck who ran for 85 yards and a touchdown
for the winners. James Harrington, a
great all-around athlete, only caught one pass on this Friday evening, but it
accounted for 36 yards. The next team to
test Cedar Falls will be Dubuque Senior at home and they have a tough
assignment. Waterloo West will remain at
Memorial Stadium and will take on the Kennedy Cougars, who have an extra day of
rest, due to their Thursday night encounter this past week with Iowa City West.
